This season I'm really feeling the look of a fitted top with a high waist full or flared pant or skirt. I'm short waisted so I have avoided high waisted pants in the past… but now that I'm over 40 I care less about traditional figure flattery and more about having a great time getting dressed. And by changing this mindset, not only do I enjoy getting dressed more, I'm finding my looks are garnering more compliments. Don't get me wrong, I still love to make myself look longer and leaner with fashion, but sometimes it's fun to buck the rules and just have fun.
So when I saw these pants at JD Williams I had to try them. I was envisioning them with my ELOQUII bell sleeve wrap top and black funky ankle boots and statement earrings. I didn't know how JD Williams fit (these pants came at the same time as the clothes in this outfit post), so I asked for a 14 and 16. The 14 was out of stock at the time so they sent me a 16. These pants are all I hoped for – a cool print in a gorgeous combo of navy and magenta, a traditional fly front but subtle elasticized waistband in back for a flattering fit, real pockets that lie perfectly so they are functional but don't gape open adding bulk.
However, the 16 is too big. Like I would fit into a 12 just fine big. Like I folded over at least an inch of the waistband in back and used safety pins to hold in place big. But with the shirt knotted like this, it covered the waistband in back and I wore this out to dinner with my family. I want to get these in 12 when they're back in stock because I know I'm going to wear the heck out of them this fall. I'd love them with my white blazer and a fitted tank, a striped tank or scoop tee and denim jacket, maybe my striped off the shoulder top, a band tee knotted or tucked in with a leather jacket, a black fitted turtleneck sweater with booties, and yes my ELOQUII top. If navy and magenta isn't your scene, this black floral option is also fun.
And when I saw this pattern, I knew I had to pair them with my red Naturalizer sandals; love the color combo, it reminds me of what I wore to the last night of the rewardStyle conference!
As for this shirt, it's based on the Naco Paris bag that Karl Lagerfeld carried in a tongue in cheek manner. With a husband having the same name, I couldn't resist getting the shirt! I cut off the hem of the sleeves and cut out the neck so it's a more feminine fit, and a nice neckline under jackets. I've worn this shirt on the blog before, and it's the only white shirt I've ever owned that remains snowy looking even with multiple wears.

Olive green is one of those colors I don’t wear often, and when I do, I don’t know why I don’t wear it more often. It’s surprisingly flattering and so versatile. What other color looks so great with brown and black, pink and orange, black and white, turquoise and teal? Chico’s reached out and asked…
This outfit is a little bit casual, a little bit polished, and a little bit nautical thanks to the Breton stripes and crisp white blazer! Blazer – Caslon Tank – H&M Jeans – JAG Shoes – Sofft “Pavia”Bag – Forever 21Bracelets -Nordstrom and Soft Surroundings Saturday morning I went to the Westfield Montgomery Mall to…
I love supporting women-owned businesses and local businesses so when Ruth Barzel reached out offering a giveaway of some pieces from her jewelry line I couldn’t resist. Ruth Barzel is a Northern Virginia-based jewelry designer who crafts pieces that are unique, but so very wearable. Fashioned with semiprecious stones, pearls, fine wire, and a variety…
White stretch poplin trousers from Caslon, orange-red silk knit tank from Banana Republic, black ponte de Roma jacket from Banana Republic Outlet, leopard peeptoe heels from BGBGirls, silver cuff. Hair is second day, random pieces blown out with dryer and round brush. Didn’t try to do more because of the humidity. Makeup is L’Oreal true…
Philosophy’s The Present Clear Makeup: Wow, I thought I knew primers until I tried this stuff out! Most primers seem to do very little on my skin – make the foundation last a bit longer, give a more even finish to the skin, reduce the look of pores. Nice, but nothing shocking. Often I find…
Doctor’s appointment (yes ladies, the fun annual one), and then work. Black tape-yarn sweater with scoop neck, empire waist and short sleeves from old Navy, suiting trousers in Palomino from Ann Taylor, round toe pumps from Jessica Simpson, black coral necklace from Mexico, silver cuff bracelet. Hair was washed but not conditioned because I ran…
Love this look, especially on you! How fantastic that we can dress how we want as we get older, instead of following silly rules. The results are exhilarating.
I’m partial to high waisted pants and think they give short legs a longer look. I’m curvy enough that I need a belt with pants to keep them from sagging in the crotch, and belts do better at my waist than low. It’s a look I’m ready to embrace.
I love that you talked about caring less about the figure flattery issue. I’m considering buying a draped silk dolman sleeved artist smock top – and with my ample chest I know it won’t be the most figure flattering thing ever. But – I kind of don’t care. I love it and think it will be so versatile in my closet. This post just gave me the gumption to order it…..
First, I have to say that I love these pants on you!
And I’m so glad to hear you talk about the “flattering issue” My mom (the 70+ model on my blog) harps on it to me all the time. But why can’t we also just have fun with our clothes?? I realize it’s how my mom was brought up, but I’m glad I’m not the only one trying to get away from that thought at least some of the time…
